Fantastic Negrito Premieres ‘The Duffler’ from Passionate New Album ‘Please Don’t Be Dead’ (Listen)

The exuberence of Fantastic Negrito plays exceptionally well in the studio. The immediacy and focus of his inspired brand of blues-rock earned the man otherwise known as Xavier Amin Dphrepaulezz a Grammy in 2017 for his 2016 album The Last Days of Oakland.

On June 15, he’ll follow that up with an anticipated new record, Please Don’t Be Dead (culling its title from his real-life experience of being in a coma after a car accident in 2000 that required extensive rehabilitation).

Here’s a grabbing song from the record titled “The Duffler”:

Said Negrito of the song, which is a particularly pointed composition:

‘The Duffler’ is a very familiar story,” says Negrito. “A story about someone having something and not appreciating it until it’s gone, when it’s too late. Given current events, I think America is in that space right now.”

It’s the second song released from the album thus far, following lead single “Plastic Hamburgers”:

Please Don’t Be Dead is Negrito’s way of reacting to his world, and the realities faced by folks in the United States in 2018.

“I wrote this album because I fear for the life of my black son,” he explains. “I fear for the lives of my daughters. I am uncertain about what kind of future they will face. Will someone shoot up their school? Will they become addicted to prescription pills? Will they wind up on the street, sleeping under freeways and overpasses? Will the police murder my son? I came up with the name Please Don’t Be Dead because I felt like we’d lost of our way as a society – and I know what happens when you chase the wrong things. It’s the story of my life.”

Pre-orders for the album are available now.

Here’s the album’s track listing:

1. “Please Don’t Be Dead”
2. “Bad Guy Necessity”
3. “A Letter To Fear”
4. “A Boy Named Andrew”
5. “Transgender Biscuits”
