Hear Judith Owen Transform Donna Summer’s ‘Hot Stuff,’ Off Her New LP ‘redisCOVERed’

Singer/songwriter Judith Owen has forged a career out of being unpredictable. And while she’s peppered various cover songs into her albums over the years, she does so in her own way — and that will continue on May 25, when she releases redisCOVERed.

As its title might suggest, this will be a collection of re-interpretations of various classics and contemporary hit songs recorded by Owen and her band, but with a unique approach. For example, she restyles songs including Drake’s “Hotline Bling,” Ed Sheeran’s “Shape Of You,” Justin Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling” and more.

Of particular note is her take on Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun,” a tribute to the late Chris Cornell. In a recent interview with Rock Cellar, Owen discussed the importance of discussing mental health and channeling her own issues into her music — something to which we can all relate, for sure.

There are also two covers of Joni Mitchell songs, “Cherokee Louise” and “Ladies Man,” as Owen pays tribute to one of her musical heroes.

Here’s her rendition of Donna Summer’s disco classic “Hot Stuff”:

“Over the years, so many people, whether it be [film producer] Nick Wechsler or audience members who hear the covers I’ve done over the years, have always had the question, ‘Why don’t you make a collection of these things because they’re so unique and unusual?’” Owen said in a statement about the album. “And I had to really ask myself why I do these covers and why they bring me so much pleasure.”

The track listing:

1. “Hotline Bling”
2. “Shape Of You”
3. “Black Hole Sun”
4. “Hot Stuff”
