Best New Music: The Used Shed Preconceptions and Branch Out with Visceral New LP ‘The Canyon’ (Stream)

The Apple Music description for The Used‘s new album The Canyon says, simply, “Refreshingly groovy tunes from the Utah rockers.”

While that phrase is accurate regarding the band’s seventh full-length album, it doesn’t quite do it justice. That’s because The Canyon, released on Friday, is a sprawling record, spanning 17 tracks melding genres, styles, and earnest lyrics from vocalist Bert McCracken that touch on loss, pain and the human struggle with life — something to which we can all relate, surely.

The record’s lead single, “Over and Over Again,” was a pretty good representation of how the band set out to do things differently this time around. Songs like “Vertigo Cave,” “Funeral Pose” and “Upper Falls” (positioned nearly consecutively) hit especially hard — not that they’re heavy songs, but because they’re powerful, resonant compositions that find the band at their absolute best.

The Canyon marks the first Used album featuring guitarist Justin Shekoski, who joined them after leaving Saosin and, eventually, replacing Quinn Allman in the Used. Throughout this record, Shekoski’s guitar work is a highlight, as is the varying tempos explored by the group this time around.

Back in the early 2000s, the Used emerged on the Warped Tour/Hot Topic scene with their visceral post-hardcore/emo sounds and songs such as “The Taste of Ink” and “Buried Myself Alive,” among others. More than 15 years later, they’re veterans of the scene, free to do what they wish — and as the stellar sounds on The Canyon prove, that’s a good place to be.
