Netflix scored a big hit with 13 Reasons Why, a dramatic series based on a 2007 book that focused on depression, mental health and teen suicide that premiered in March and garnered much attention online.
The series’ male lead, 20-year-old Dylan Minnette, also has a band, Wallows, which also features fellow actor Braeden Lemasters (known for Men of a Certain Age and several other television/film appearances) and Cole Preston, which they presumably find time for between shooting schedules.
Wallows have released three singles over the past few months, with “Pleaser” earning more than three million listens on Spotify. Here’s that song, which calls to mind the earnest early material from the Strokes and bands of that era:
The buzzy, lo-fi sound continues on their second single, “Sun Tan,” which features some crisp, jangly guitars and a catchy rhythm:
The latest single, “Uncomfortable,” meanwhile, ventures into dream-pop territory:
The variety of sounds explored by Wallows so far on their trio of singles is pretty impressive – as is their social media following already, perhaps sparked in part due to Minnette’s “other” job – but the music speaks for itself, really.
Production on the second season of 13 Reasons Why is currently underway in Northern California, so it seems likely that Wallows won’t be playing any live shows for a while, but if they do — go catch a show. They definitely have an intriguing sound that ought to earn them a bright future.
