Back in 1982, when you swore you’d never pay for bottled water or cable TV, MTV played music videos all day.
One of the most popular that year was Our House by Madness, a UK pop outfit that plays ska, a Jamaican beat that was a forerunner to reggae. After Our House reached #7 on the US charts, Madness couldn’t even get committed around here. But the group has had plenty of hits in the UK and has a new album with the catchy My Girl 2.
Its beat, though, has apparently been snatched from another ‘80s British band — Fine Young Cannibals. FYC, led by singer Roland Gift, topped the charts in 1988 with Good Thing, but by 1992 the Cannibals were cooked. Did Madness come by My Girl 2’s rhythm track honestly or did they figure anyone who’d remember Good Thing is wearing a Loud ‘N Clear and shouting “Bingo!” all day?
You tell us.
