Bono and The Edge, Eddie Vedder, Sting, Paul Simon, David Bowie, Patti Smith… it’s an impressive list and that’s not even half of the artists contributing previously unheard tracks to a new compilation.
Every Mother Counts is an organization run by Christy Turlington Burns with a focus on improving maternal health and reducing the mortality rate. “A woman dies every 90 seconds from complications of pregnancy. 90% of the deaths are preventable,” it states on EveryMotherCounts.org.
Every Mother Counts Volume 1 featured (among others) mothers Madonna, Ani DiFranco, Sinéad O’Connor, and Martha Wainwright, and was sold through Starbucks with a portion of the sale going to the charity.
The second volume will do the same, this time including some pretty famous male artists (who are or will soon be parents). And when you’re an internationally renowned supermodel, many of them are your friends.
Turlington Burns stated:
“I went to friends first, as I did with the first CD. Bono and Chris Martin were great supporters of the project the first time around, and when I knew I wanted to include men on this album they were obvious choices. They are also both fathers to daughters.”
The majority of the tracks are exclusive to this collection, like Beck’s cover of Dylan’s Corrina Corrina, an Eddie Vedder tune called Skipping, and an acoustic version of U2’s Original of the Species.
The compilation will be available at Starbucks May 1 through 29 in honor of Mother’s Day.
